Using Your Military Experience To Write Science Fiction

Many veterans and active-duty military members have profound experiences in combat, in war zones, during peacekeeping, or in exotic places—all of which they may want to use in writing fiction. It’s an incredible well from which to draw very vivid and emotional writing. In this seminar, open only to writers of science fiction and fantasy with a military background, we’ll discuss turning the memories and emotions of military experience into good fiction, opening yourself up to your own past (present and future) fears, and building characters and events that appeal well beyond a military/veteran readership. Join acclaimed science fiction novelist, David Weber, and share some experiences, brainstorm some story ideas, and look at some examples of writers who got it right.

This class is FULL and registration has ended. Don’t forget David Weber’s reading and conversation to be held in the evening. Please Note that this class is open only to active duty military, veterans, and family members or caregivers of veterans/active duty. In addition, this class is only open to SF/Fantasy Writers.

About the Instructor

David Mark Weber is an American science fiction and fantasy author.  Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1952 he has lived the majority of his life in the Greenville, SC area.  He started writing poetry and short fiction in the fifth grade, and a lifetime of reading, writing, and studying has given him a love of storytelling that clearly shows in his work.  In his stories, he creates a consistent and rationally explained technology and society.  Even when dealing with fantasy themes, the magical powers are treated like another technology with supporting rational laws and principles.

His most popular and enduring character is Honor Harrington, whose story, together with the “Honorverse” she inhabits, has been developed through nineteen novels, six shared-universe anthologies, a three book young-adult series, and “Honorverse historical” Manticore Ascendant series, written with Timothy Zahn and Tom Pope.  To date, David has more than eighty book titles and twenty two separate series he has written or co-written. He is the winner of several Dragon Awards, most recently in 2019.

He currently lives in Greenville, SC with his lovely wife of more than 20 years Sharon, their three children, two dog and numerous cats.  Keep up with David’s schedule by following his Facebook page and at www.davidweber.net.  Works can be purchased at his official on-line store Weber Universal Outfitters at www.weberuniversaloutfitters.com.
